St. Dennis, also spelled St. Denis, was born in Italy and sent into Gaul (modern France) with five or six other bishops. He became the first bishop of Lutetia (modern Paris). During the last days of the persecution of the Church under Emperor Trajanus Decius, St. Dennis was beheaded with Rusticus, a priest, and Eleutherius, a deacon. The bodies were rescued from the Seine River and buried. The Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Denis was erected over their remains.

The St. Dennis Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of France. His Feast Day is October 9.
