St. Brendan, born in County Kerry, Ireland, circa 485, was known as “the Voyager” or “the Navigator.” Becoming a monk and priest in 512, he founded many monasteries, the most renowned being Clonfert, which eventually had 3000 monks. St. Brendan was famous for his many missionary voyages around the British Isles, but it is now believed that he may have reached North America.

The St. Brendan Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of sailors and mariners. His Feast Day is May 16.
