St. Mark the Evangelist was a Levite and possibly a minister in a synagogue when he met Jesus. Mark was with Paul and Barnabas in Antioch and Cyprus, and later was in Rome during Paul’s imprisonment. His Gospel was probably written between the years of 60 and 70.

According to tradition, Mark was the first bishop of Alexandria, where he died as a martyr. In the ninth century, his relics were moved to Venice and enshrined in a cathedral dedicated to him.

The St. Mark Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of Venice, of notaries, and of lawyers. His Feast Day is April 25.
