What is a Gremiale:
A gremiale, sometimes anglicized as gremial, is a square or oblong cloth which a bishop, according to the Pontificate and Caeremoniale Episcoporum, should wear over the lap, when seated on the throne during the singing of the Kyrie, Gloria and the Credo, during the distribution of blessed candles, palms or ashes, during the washing of the feet on Holy Thursday in the Mass of the Lord’s Supper and also during the Catholic anointments in Holy Orders.
The primary object of the gremiale is to prevent the soiling of pontifical vestments, especially the chasuble. The gremiale is made of linen to facilitate its cleaning in case it is soiled.
