At the time of Jesus, spices were expensive and sought after. Coming from Arabia, Egypt, India, Mesopotamia and Persia, spices were used in food preparation, medicines, anointing oils, incense, cosmetics and ointments. They were derived from plants and prized for various qualities. Foods were seasoned with cinnamon, coriander, cumin and mint. Medicines were made from dill and saffron. Cinnamon, coriander and saffron were also used in cosmetics, as were aloe and henna.
