Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born December 17, 1936 in Flores, a "barrio" of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was the first of five children born to Italian immigrants, Mario Jose' Bergoglio and Regina Maria Sivori. Jorge graduated from technical school, and in 1955, chose the path of the priesthood.
On March 13, 2013 Cardinal Bergoglio was elected to succeed Pope Benedict XVI. He chose the papal name "Francis" in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. Hailed as "the first Pope of the Americas", and "the first Jesuit Pope". Pope Francis is known for his humility, his service to the poor, and his unrelenting commitment to building bridges between people of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs - earning him the title of "The Pope of The People".
