St. Angela Merici, born on March 21, 1470, was orphaned at age ten, so she and her sister were lovingly raised by her uncle’s family. When her sister died suddenly without the last sacraments, Angela was so distressed that she became a Third Order Franciscan in order to pray intensely for her soul. Later, she began a school for teaching local girls the catechism. She founded a congregation dedicated to the religious training of young women, the Ursuline Order, which received papal approval in 1544.
The St. Angela Sterling Silver Medal honors her as the Patron Saint of handicapped people. Her Feast Day is January 27.
