St. Augustine, born in 354 in a provincial Roman city in North Africa, was raised in the faith by his mother, St. Monica. When he was older, he left the church to follow the Manichaean religion and also became a master in rhetoric and philosophy. Augustine took a mistress with whom he had a son, Adeodatus.

When he moved to Milan in 383, he met St. Ambrose, and with his influence and his mother’s prayers, he converted to Christianity. He was ordained a priest and became famous for his preaching. St. Augustine wrote many books including his Confessions and City of God.

The St. Augustine Sterling Silver Medal honors him as a Doctor of the Church and the Patron Saint of brewers, theologians, the city of Carthage, and printers.
