St. Bernadette was born in Lourdes, France, on January 7, 1844. She was poor and suffered from severe asthma. On February 11, 1858, she had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the banks of the Gave River near Lourdes. When subsequent visions became public, the authorities tried to frighten Bernadette into recanting her accounts. A spring appeared on the site, and it was reported that many sick and lame were healed in the waters. Bernadette said that the Blessed Virgin wanted a church built, and when the authorities tried to stop it, the Empress Eugenie stepped in, and the construction went forward.

The St. Bernadette Sterling Silver Medal honors her as the Patron Saint of sick people, poverty, the family, Lourdes, and shepherds. Her Feast Day is April 16.
