St. Catherine, born in Siena in 1347, experienced visions from the age of seven. At fifteen, she entered the Third Order of St. Dominic. In 1378, she acted as mediator between Pope Gregory XI and the government of Florence, and later became the counselor of Pope Urban VI. St. Catherine was declared the first woman doctor of the Church.
The St. Catherine of Siena Sterling Silver Medal honors her as the Patron Saint of fire prevention and firefighters. Her Feast Day is April 29.
