The story of St. Cecilia is noted as “probably legendary”. Born in a patrician family, she married against her will to a pagan noble, Valerianus. She convinced him to respect her virginity and he soon became a Christian. Valerianus and Cecilia’s brother were arrested and beheaded for burying martyrs. When Cecilia tried to bury them, she, too, was arrested and condemned to be smothered to death. This was miraculously prevented, so she was beheaded. St. Cecilia lived 3 days before dying from her wounds.

The St. Cecilia Sterling Silver Medal honors her as the Patron Saint of musicians due to the legend that on her wedding night, Cecilia did not hear the secular music but sang to the Lord in her own heart. Her Feast Day is November 22.
