St. Clare, born in Assisi in 1194, was from a wealthy family, but gave up her worldly goods and joined St. Francis. As other women became attracted to the Franciscan way of life, including her sisters and mother, the community of the Poor Clares was founded at San Damiano, of which Clare was abbess. During her illness of 28 years, Clare’s devotion to the Holy Eucharist was her great support, and spinning altar linens was her only work.
The St. Clare Sterling Silver Medal honors her as the Patron Saint of embroiderers, television, eyes, and goldsmiths. Her Feast Day is August 11.
