Born in Maratha, Turkey, St. Daniel the Stylite became a monk at age 12. Daniel spent 9 years as a hermit at Philemora, near Constantinople, then ascended a pillar and spent the next 33 years on a series of pillars erected for him by Emperor Leo I. He was ordained atop a pillar and gave prophecies and counseled people. He died on his pillar and was buried at its foot.
The St. Daniel Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of prisoners. His Feast Day is December 11.
