St. George is one of the most famous saints in Western Europe. The legends concerning dragons arose in the twelfth century and made him a model knight and a protector of women. George was venerated in England as early as the eighth century and was the patron saint of the Christian crusaders. It is supposed that he suffered martyrdom in the persecution under Diocletian at Nicomedia in the beginning of the fourth century.
The St. George Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of soldiers and boy scouts. His Feast Day is April 23.
