St. John, born in Spain in 1542, was raised by his mother, Catalina Alvarez, after his father died when John was still an infant. He studied at the Jesuit school of Medina and was apprenticed at age fifteen in the hospital of Our Lady of Conception. After professing with the Carmelites, he was ordained in 1567. St. John became friends with Teresa of Avila when they both believed the Carmelites were becoming too lax. He established the first Discalced monastery and adopted the name John of the Cross.
But he suffered many trials throughout the years from those who opposed him in his own order. He also lived under the constant threat of the Spanish inquisition. Later, the superior of the Discalced Carmelites stripped him of all offices and banished him to an outer monastery, where he died on December 14, 1591.
The St. John of the Cross Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of contemplatives since he is known as the Doctor of Mystical Theology. His Feast Day is December 14.
