St. Martha was the sister of Lazarus and Mary at Bethany, Israel. She was probably the older sister, because she seemed to be in charge of the household. In Luke 10:38-42, she complained that Mary just sat listening to Jesus instead of helping with the work. Jesus told her, “It is Mary who has chosen the better part.” Martha was also the one who went out to meet Jesus when Lazarus died, while Mary stayed at home. Tradition states that Martha, Mary, and Lazarus went to Gaul as missionaries. Since there was no such thing as canonization in those days, we just assume from scripture references that she is a saint.

The St. Martha Sterling Silver Medal honors her as the Patron Saint of homemakers, maids, and innkeepers. Her Feast Day is July 29.
