St. Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru, in 1579. He became a Dominican lay brother and performed various tasks around the monastery. Martin found his true calling caring for the poor and sick outside the monastery walls. He founded an orphanage, and with St. Rose’s help, he ministered to African slaves. He died in 1639 and was canonized in 1962 by Pope John XXIII.

The St. Martin Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of interracial justice. His Feast Day is November 3.
