St. Peter, a native of Bethsaida, was called by Christ to be not only a disciple, but to be “the Rock” upon which our church was built. Peter was always listed as the first of the Apostles in New Testament accounts. He was at Jesus’ side at the raising Jairus’ daughter, the Transfiguration, and the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. The accounts of him cutting off the right ear of the slave of Malchus and later denying Jesus three times are well-known. After the Resurrection, Peter assumed leadership of the Apostles preaching, performing miracles, and bringing the Gospel to the Gentiles.
St. Peter was martyred in Rome during the reign of Nero, probably in 64. He was crucified upside down because he felt unworthy to die in the same manner as Jesus.
The St. Peter Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the First Pope. His Feast Day is June 29.
