St. Philip came from Bethsaida and was part of the group of disciples with John the Baptist. Christ called him only one day after choosing Andrew and Peter. Philip is usually placed fifth in the list of Apostles, after Peter, Andrew, James, and John. The Gospel of John mentions Philip in the feeding of the multitudes and the desire of some Greeks to meet Jesus. Also in that Gospel is when Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus answered, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.”

St. Philip died a martyr during the reign of Domitian, perhaps in Asia Minor.

The St. Philip Sterling Silver Medal honors his Feast Day on May 3.
