St. Vincent de Paul was born in France in 1580 and was ordained a Franciscan in 1600. Influenced by Cardinal Pierre de Berulle, he decided to devote his life to charity. While in the household of a commanding admiral, he witnessed the suffering of the rowers and sought to relieve their oppression. Later he established confraternities of men and women to aid the poor and sick. One such group was the Sisters of Charity. The number of Vincentians increased and spread throughout the world. St. Vincent became the spokesperson of the poor at that time when many from the wealthy class were neglecting them. He died in Paris on September 27, 1660 and was canonized in 1737.
The St. Vincent Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of charities and caregivers. His Feast Day is September 25.
