Next to Mary of Nazareth, the saint most often seen in artwork holding the child Jesus in his arms is St. Anthony of Padua. The detail in this Veronese Bronze statue is incredible, from the facial features on both St. Anthony and the Infant Jesus to the robe. This bronze statue is a perfect complement to any home or parish religious artwork.

St. Anthony of Padua was the son of a knight of the court of King Alfonso II. In 1221, he joined the Franciscans and went on a mission to Morocco but soon returned because of ill health. Settling in Padua, he reformed the city and aided the poor. Anthony died at a Poor Clare Convent on June 13, 1231. He is often pictured holding the Christ Child because of a vision he had seeing the Child in brilliant rays of light clinging with both arms around Anthony’s neck.

The St. Anthony Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of lost articles, oppressed people, against starvation, and amputees. His Feast Day is June 13.
