Our Lady appeared in the year 1830 in a vision to Saint Catherine Laboure, and instructed her to have a two-sided medal struck after the model of the vision. This image is the front side of that model. Mary is poised upon the world symbolizing her queenship of heaven and earth, and the rays shining from her hands represent the graces she obtains for those who ask them of her. She is also standing on the head of the serpent, which symbolizes the fulfillment of the prophesy in the third chapter of Genesis:
“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will strike at your head, while you strike at his heel.”
