St. Barbara, brought up pagan by Dioscorus, her tyrannical father, was kept secluded in a lonely tower. In this forced solitude, she secretly studied and was baptized by a Christian priest. Barbara also convinced some workmen to add a third window in honor of the Trinity. When Dioscorus discovered her conversion, he denounced her before the tribunal and beheaded her himself. But on his way home, he was struck by lightning.
The St. Barbara Sterling Silver Medal honors her as the Patron Saint of miners, architects, builders, brass workers, stone workers, artillerymen, and protection from lightning and storms.
