St. Dominic de Guzman, born in Spain in 1170, studied at the University of Palencia and became a Franciscan canon regular at the cathedral of Osma in 1199. Later, he traveled to southern France to preach against the Albigensian heretics and to reform the local monasteries. For this reason he established the Dominican Order. The convent for nuns was founded first, to rescue young girls from heresy and crime. Then a company of apostolic men gathered around him and became the Order of Friar Preachers. When Pope Innocent III started a crusade to put an end to the heresy, St. Dominic accompanied the army to encourage the soldiers.
The St. Dominic Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of astronomers. His Feast Day is August 8.
