St. Elizabeth, Queen of Hungary, married at the age of thirteen to a young nobleman named Louis. She spent so much time helping the sick and the poor that her husband and his family accused her of squandering the royal treasure. They banished her and her four children from the palace, but after the Crusades, her husband’s friends felt compelled to restore her position as queen and her son as the rightful heir. St. Elizabeth is pictured with a basket of roses or a basket of bread because once, when her husband complained about her charitable works, a basket of roses was changed into a basket of bread.
The St. Elizabeth Sterling Silver Medal honors her as the Patron Saint of homeless people and bakers. Her Feast Day is November 17.
