St. Faustina was born Helena Kowalska in Poland on August 25, 1905. She was the third of ten children. At age twenty, she joined the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. The following year she took her vows and the name Sister Maria Faustina.

In the 1930’s, St. Maria Faustina received a message from God asking her to become an apostle of mercy. She imitated the life of Christ through sacrificing, writing about God’s mercy, and bringing peace and joy to others. She was so cheerful and humble that most people around her didn’t realize she was suffering from tuberculosis.

After her death in 1938, people began to discover her powerful writings and mystical experiences. Today, St. Maria Faustina is spreading the message of God’s mercy through her book Divine Mercy in My Soul: The Diary of St. Faustina. Her Feast Day is October 5.
