St. Gregory the Great was born in Rome, c. 540, to a patrician family. He had a legal education, but after the death of his father, he left his secular career and founded a monastery in the family palace. He was ordained deacon in 578, and twelve years later, he became pope. During his pontificate, St. Gregory accomplished great things including reorganizing the Curia, encouraging the growth of monasticism, and upholding the position of the bishop of Rome. His many writings and reform of the Liturgy gave him a prominent place in the history of Christian worship.

The St. Gregory Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of musicians and singers. His Feast Day is September 3.
