St. John the Evangelist, the youngest of the Apostles, is known as the “Beloved Disciple”. He was the son of Zebedee and he and brother James the Greater were called “the sons of thunder”. James was present at the raising of Jairus’ daughter, the Transfiguration, and the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. He was also entrusted with the care of Mary at the Crucifixion. St. John wrote the Gospel and the three epistles attributed to him. There is some debate about whether he wrote the Book of Revelation or if it was one of his followers. There is also a question if he died a martyr or of old age.
The St. John Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of engravers, printers, and editors. His Feast Day is December 27.
