The birth of St. John the Baptist was foretold by an angel to his father, Zachary. Scripture states that he leapt in his mother Elizabeth’s womb when Mary, pregnant with Jesus, visited. In his youth, he remained hidden, but before Jesus began his public life, it is reported that John went into the desert to pray before “preparing the way” for Jesus. St. John the Baptist told the people to repent and be baptized. Then Jesus himself came to the banks of the Jordan to be baptized by John.
St. John’s work was complete as people began to follow Jesus. John stayed near the Jordan until arrested by King Herod Antipas. Herod’s wife schemed to have John beheaded because he had rebuked their scandalous lifestyle.
The St. John the Baptist Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of Baptism. His Feast Day is June 24.
