St. Matthew, also called Levi, was probably born in Galilee. When Jesus called him to follow him, he was working as a tax collector in Capernaum. Matthew wrote the first gospel in Aramaic or Hebraic. In it, he includes the genealogy, ministry, Passion, and Resurrection of Christ. St. Matthew was martyred in Ethiopia or Persia.
The St. Matthew Pewter Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of accountants and bankers. His Feast Day is September 25.
