St. Paul was originally a Roman citizen named Saul. He was raised a Pharisee and he persecuted the Nazarenes. On his way to Damascus one day, he underwent a profound conversion. A powerful light, which he understood to be Christ, left him blind. After spending 3 days in darkness, he was baptized by Ananias and his sight was restored. Now known as Paul, he spent several years in Arabia in prayer and meditation.

As the Apostle of the Gentiles, St. Paul went on missionary journeys to those lands and endured much suffering. St. Paul wrote extensively on those journeys, his letters comprising one-third of the New Testament. He was martyred about the year 67.

The St. Paul Pewter Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of publishers and reporters. St. Paul's Feast Day is June 29.
