Very little is known about the life of St. Philomena. The remains of a young woman were found in the catacomb of St. Priscilla in 1802. There were indications that she was a martyr and her name was inscribed on stones, so the remains were exhumed, cataloged, and stored. Later, when her relics were enshrined in a chapel in Magnano, many miracles were reported and St. Philomena became one the Church’s most popular saints.
The St. Philomena Sterling Silver Medal honors her as the Patron Saint of infants and children. Her Feast Day is August 11.
