St. Pio was born in 1887 in southern Italy to peasant farmers.  He joined the Capuchin Friars at age 15 and was ordained in 1910. Padre Pio is known as the first priest to receive the stigmata, the five wounds of Christ’s Passion. Because of his spiritual insight and holiness, thousands came to Padre Pio seeking counsel.  He had a special devotion to the Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin.  More than a hundred thousand people attended his funeral in 1968. St. Padre Pio was canonized by Pope John Paul II on June 16, 2002.

The St. Pio Pewter Medal honors his Feast Day on September 23.
