St. Rachel was born in Dorogobuz, Russia, in 1833. She came from a wealthy, devout family and was baptized Mary in the Russian Church. Her parents wanted her to marry, but she was determined to enter religious life. She took the name Rachel after settling at the convent of the Savior of Borodino. St. Rachel was venerated for her prayer life, her visions, and her skill as a spiritual director.
