St. Rita Pewter Medal 1-1/16" h 950-532

St. Rita, also known as Margarita, was born in Italy in 1381.  She desired to become a nun, but her parents forced her to marry at the age of twelve.  She spent eighteen unhappy years with a cruel man, had two sons, and was widowed when her husband was killed in a fight.  When both sons died also, Rita decided to follow her dream of becoming a nun. The Augustinians refused her at first, because she was a widow and not a virgin, but in 1413, they finally accepted her into the Order.  She was devoted to prayer and charity, and during her illnesses, she received visions and wounds on her forehead resembling the crown of thorns.  St. Rita was canonized in 1900.

The St. Rita Pewter Patron Saint Medal honors her as the Patron Saint of loneliness and impossible dreams. St. Rita's Feast Day is May 22.
