St. Robert Bellarmine was born in 1542 in Tuscany, Italy. He entered the Jesuit Order and was ordained in 1576. A respected theologian, Robert defended Catholic doctrines to Protestants and was involved in the controversy over Galileo. Pope Clement VIII appointed him cardinal in 1599. St. Robert died in 1621.

The St. Robert Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of catechists. His Feast Day is September 17.
