St. Roch was born in 1295 probably at Montpellier, France. He is well-known for the distinctive birthmark on his chest, a red cross. It is believed that while traveling through Italy, he found a community filled with the plague. He healed the afflicted there and then did the same in other towns. Later when he returned home, he wasn’t recognized by his own family. He was arrested as a spy and died in prison. When the townspeople saw the red cross, they realized his identity.

In art, St. Roch is dressed as a pilgrim in the company of a dog.

The St. Roch Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the patron saint against diseases. His Feast Day is August 16.
