St. Rose was born Isabel de Flores y de Olivia in 1586 in Lima, Peru. She took the name Rose at confirmation in 1597 because as an infant, her face was transformed by a mystical rose. St. Rose grew flowers and made lace to support her poor family, but her main focus was her spiritual life. When she became a Dominican tertiary, she endured persecutions from friends and family for her refusal to give up her virginity. But at the same time Rose put herself through severe penance and fasting in her devotion. She also cared for destitute children and elderly. She died from exhaustion in 1617. St. Rose became the first American to be canonized in 1671.
The St. Rose Sterling Silver Patron Saint Medal honors her as the Patron Saint of Peru, the Americas, the Indies, and the Philippines. Her Feast Day is August 23.
