Little is known of Sebastian except that he was martyred during the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian. It is believed that he served as an officer in the imperial guard under Diocletian until it was discovered that he was a Christian. According to legend, Sebastian was shot by archers, but the arrows failed to kill him. Later, the emperor had him clubbed to death.
The St. Sebastian Sterling Silver Medal honors him as the Patron Saint of athletes and soldiers. His Feast Day is January 20.
